DOWN GO THE ROCKET. DOGS WIN 4-1.
The Saint John Sea Dogs recorded their second straight win over the Prince Edward Island Rocket last night at Harbour Station, defeating the club 4-1 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.
The Rocket were able to hang around until the third period where the Sea Dogs exploded for three goals. Saint John, for the second straight night, didn’t play the style of game that has them ranked No. 1 in the Canadian Hockey League. But as they did Tuesday in Charlottetown, the Sea Dogs were able to find a way to win.
After a scoreless and slightly dull first period, the Sea Dogs carried 16-7 shots advantage over the Rocket.
Just 11 seconds into the middle session, Zach Phillips dropped the puck for Steven Anthony who riffled a shot over the glove of Rocket netminder Evan Mosher to make it 1-0 Saint John.
Fast-forward to the third period, Jonathan Huberdeau centered the disc for Stanislav Galiev who beat Mosher low glove side to double the Sea Dogs’ lead. Then, 12 seconds later at 4:50, Anthony ripped a shot from a little ways inside the blue line that went off Mosher’s glove and trickled in to make it a 3-0 Saint John game.
Michael Ortika got the Rocket on the board at 8:20 with his second goal in his rookie campaign. Ortika fired the puck from the wing, hitting Jacob DeSerres' trapper before going into the corner of the cage. But at 9:47, Mike Thomas got the Sea Dogs’ three goal lead back thanks to a nice pass from Anthony to give Saint John a 4-1 win.
STILL STREAKING
The Sea Dogs have now won a season high 10 consecutive contests. On this date last year, Saint John had won 20-straight games in what would amount to an epic 22-game stretch.
The club has won 16 of their last 17 games with the one loss coming in a shootout against Chicoutimi. The Dogs have not lost in regulation since October 22 in Bathurst.
Also, the Sea Dogs improved to an unbelievable 16-0-0-1 on home-ice this season. They play one last home game - Sunday against Halifax - prior to the Christmas break.
TURK NOT HAPPY
It wasn’t the Sea Dogs’ best game last night. Head coach Gerard Gallant preached about it to the Telegraph-Journal.
“I thought we were awful, to be honest,'' Gallant said. "There was a lot of cheating, individual play again, selfishness and guys not ready to perform. I didn't like our game one bit tonight and I didn't like the way anybody played.
"We didn't play well (in Tuesday's 3-2 win on P.E.I.), we didn't play well again tonight. I don't know if they're looking ahead to the (Christmas) break or what's going on right now, but you get a bit cocky. We'll have to play better in Lewiston Friday night.''
DOUBLEHEADER
This match ended the Sea Dogs – Rocket extremely rare mid-week home-and-home series. The Sea Dogs won both contests, outscoring the Rocket 7-3 along the way. Saint John is now 4-0 against PEI this year after going just 5-3 last year.
NO PARADIS
Philippe Paradis, surprisingly, did not play for PEI last night. Paradis has been solid for the Rocket this season, scoring 13 goals and adding 14 assists in 27 games this year. He even scored a goal Tuesday night at the Charlottetown Civic Centre against Saint John.
Nothing on his status has popped up yet.
Interestingly enough, Steve Turcotte (who has already started up the trade rumor machine for another year) posted on his blog Wednesday that the Rocket could end up trading Paradis if they chose to be sellers once again at the deadline.
ANTHONY HEATING UP
Steven Anthony has been producing the past few games. The Vancouver Canucks prospect has three goals and four assists in his last five games. He had three goals and three assists in seven November contests.
He seems to playing well on a line with the team’s top two scorers in Zach Phillips and Jonathan Huberdeau.
GAUTHIER GONE
Sea Dogs rugged third liner Danick Gauthier will likely be forced to serve an automatic one-game suspension tomorrow following a fight/instigating penalty in the third period.
After a big collision at 18:44 of the third period and Saint John ahead by three, Gauthier and Cody Linteau got into a scrap in front of the penalty boxes. Gauthier pounded Linteau in the fight, hardly allowing the PEI forward to stand up straight. Both players received fighting penalties while Gauthier also picked up a misconduct for instigating.
QUICK HITS
This was the 375th game in Sea Dogs franchise history… Steven Anthony hit the double-digit mark in goals last night, becoming the fifth player on the team to do so… it was the fifth straight game at home that the announced crowd was under the 4,000 mark. The Sea Dogs are now averaging 3,854 fans per game which is good for fourth in the league… this was the Sea Dogs’ third Wednesday game of the season and first at home. They have won all of them... Zach Phillips and Steven Anthony were both a team high +3… Jonathan Huberdeau and Stanislav Galiev each had a team high five shots… Matthew Hobbs and Samuel Morneau led the way in shots for PEI, firing five shots each on goal. Morneau had a few good chances.
