Simon Despres has survived the first round of cuts at Team Canada’s selection camp in Toronto.
Hockey Canada announced their first round of cuts this morning, releasing nine players from the camp that began Sunday.
Those getting cut this morning were: Portland Winterhawks left winger Brad Ross, Brendan Gallagher of the Vancouver Giants, centre Joey Hishon and winger Garrett Wilson of the Owen Sound Attack, Medicine Hat Tigers centre Linden Vey, Chilliwack's Ryan Howse, and right winger Reilly Smith of the University of Miami.
Brayden McNabb of the Kootenay Ice and Owen Sound's Jesse Blacker were the only defensemen to be let go.
“Assuming this year's squad goes with 13 forwards, seven defencemen and two goaltenders, there are still four forwards, three blueliners and two goalies left to release,” writes TSN.
“Head coach Dave Cameron and his staff will make those final cuts on Wednesday morning, when the 22-man roster is finalized for the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championship beginning on Boxing Day.”
Despres has been getting mixed reviews at the camp but apparently played well in yesterday’s intrasquad game. All five players from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League remain at the camp.
The remaining players will take on the Canadian University National Team tonight.
