Call it middle finger mojo

  • Not even a deep cut to his middle finger from a skate blade could keep Mitchell Callahan from helping the Kelowna Rockets to a 3-1 win over the visiting Tri City Americans. Callahan, who suffered a deep cut from the skate of a linesman in a first period scrap with Americans defenceman Brock Sutherland, scored once and added an assist in the Rockets 39th win of the season. Callahan's cut was deep, but fortunately didn't sever any tendons. Let's just say the feisty forward won't be fighting any time soon.
  • Callahan scored the game winner when his shot from just inside the blue line was partially stopped by Americans goaltender Drew Owsley before squeaking over the goal line. Callahan's goal broke a 1-1 tie before Evan Bloodoff scored his 22nd goal of the season into an empty net as the Rockets won for the 20th time this season on home ice.
  • Adam Brown was named the games 1st star and was full credit for making life miserable for the Americans. Brown made several big saves and a times was lucky during a goal mouth scramble in the third period when not even he knew where the puck was. The Americans only goal came on a power play chance after Rockets forward Colton Heffley was charged with a five minute major and game misconduct for charging.
  • I have no argument with the five minute major for charging, but how does Tri City d-man Brock Sutherland get away with only a two minute minor penalty for kneeing after taking down forward Colton Sissons before the game is even a minute old? Sissons crumbles to the ice in pain and never returns after the hit while Tri City captain Kruise Reddick is back on the power play after Heffley gets the boot for the charging major.
  • Rockets Director of Player Personnel Lorne Frey was honoured before the game with the WHL Distinguished Services Award for his hard work with the league and the Rockets organization. Outside of GM Bruce Hamilton, no one has served as employee longer with the Rockets than Frey. WHL Commissioner Ron Robison and former Rockets defenseman Josh Gorges were on hand for the pre-game ceremony.
  • Speaking of the 'Commish', here is my conversation with him before the game.
