The Barcelona-Real Madrid Rivalry: How Justin Bieber

We are all looking forward to April’s El Clasico at the Bernabeu in La Liga and to the 2010/11 Copa del Rey final – Barcelona vs Real Madrid. Even the action in the UEFA Champions League’s quarter-finals hasn’t taken away some of the charm attached to these domestic fixtures.

Since the past few years, the balance between Barcelona and Real Madrid in terms of success has shifted in favour of the Catalans. Their record against Los Blancos under Pep Guardiola is simply outstanding. Barca have defined the words “humiliation” and “disappointment” in each of the past big showdowns named El Clasico.

In truth, their 5-0 and 6-2 defeats of Real Madrid among other triumphs have not only exposed the Spanish giants’ weakness. They have actually increased the bitterness and the pain within every Real Madrid supporter.

And as if it wasn’t embarrassing enough to possess such an awful recent record against Barcelona, Los Blancos have been forced to deal lately with... let’s call it “jealousy”, maybe! Actually, Real Madrid are known to be the number one team of several celebrities around the world.

It’s a pride that they own as part of their glamour. Actors Antonio Banderas, Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, athletes Chad Ochocinco and Rafael Nadal, singers Enrique and Julio Iglesias, King of Jordan Abdullah II... well, the list is so long! It originally includes Shakira but now the name of the Colombian singer has been put into doubts since she is in relationship with Barcelona’s Gerard Pique.

Has Shakira screwed up her relationship with Real Madrid, then? Perhaps she has done so, but maybe not as much as Los Blancos themselves - who even decided to ban her songs from being played at the Santiago Bernabeu. This bizarre new rule simply reminded the public of the intensity that exists in the Barcelona-Real Madrid rivalry.

So Real Madrid’s celebrity fans list has lost a name to rivals Barca, and now another illustrious person has been added to the Catalans’ popular supporters in the form of Justin Bieber. The teenage Pop star was in Madrid on Tuesday to show his football skills and to reveal his love for Barcelona. Check out the video below:

Everything the “King of Youtube views” does get full exposure, so expect Barcelona’s popularity to increase dramatically among ignorant people in Canada and in the USA especially. Now, one thing that a proud Barcelona fan may state to tease Real Madrid is this: "The Catalans dominate everywhere – on the field like among celebrity fans – because of the team’s unmatchable and enviable style of football." What Madrid fans could wish, however, is that Justin Bieber's image of hate and disgust among millions of music fans around the world stains Barcelona in a way or another.

But, in truth, can Los Blancos still boast about their popularity among the world’s top personalities? When you look at Barcelona’s celebrity list of supporters, names such as basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, Hip Hop legend Snoop Dogg and Spanish politician Zapatero seem to say otherwise. Oh... and let's confirm the inclusion of Justin Bieber and Shakira too, now!
